Sioux Lookout, ON – It is Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario, a week where we are all encouraged to learn about the Treaties in place across our region – and across Canada.

“For the Municipality, beginning each Council meeting with an acknowledgment that we are located on the lands of the Treaty 3 territory is a key way that we recognize Treaties on an ongoing basis,” explained Mayor Doug Lawrance. “We also have the honour of servicing many communities in Treaties 5 and 9, the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation.”

The Municipality encourages everyone to take time this week to learn more about Treaties – what they are, how they came to be, and the important role they played in shaping our history and heritage.

We are all Treaty people. We all have rights and responsibilities under these foundations of Canadian society. Knowing them, and acting on them, is an important step towards meaningful reconciliation.
